Urban Romantic

Between 2008 and 2009, in accordance with the Ufficio Carta dell’Agro of the Rome municipality, I realized a photographic campaign on the artifacts of industrial archeology. Observing those spaces, I thought of the function that they had in the past in relation to the city, to their present state of emptiness, abandon, and ruin, and how a community can make them function and rethink their use. The project “Romantico Metropolitano” concentrates on some “unresolved” spaces, from an uncertain future, or better, from the future in which another conflict would generate, in fact, conflict places. I think of the “ex-Mercati Generali” of the Ostiense inactive since 2002, which was supposed to be transformed already in 2009, with Rem Koolhaas’s “Città dei giovani” project, but that still lies semi-abandoned. Nevertheless, the wonderful examples of industrial archeology in the Italgas area of the Ostiense, excluding the “Gazometro” that was recently and incredibly restored, are crumbling irreversibly. I think of the “ex- Mattatoio” unstitched patchwork composed by MACRO Testaccio, a piece of “Università Roma Tre”, by the “Città dall’Altra Economia”, by the “Pelanda” (Centre of Cultural Production) and by multiple interspaces and abandoned artifacts. My photography is that of immersive documentation that does not renounce the subjectivity of the vision. It is neither critical nor nostalgic and does not want to condemn. It is a reflection on photography (what, like, when, at what distance and with which lens, etc) and on the photographed object. With my work, I do not want to affirm anything, but simply highlight the points of reflection for the viewer.
